LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Jugs, kazoos and even washboards fill the air with music at Waterfront Park.
The National Jug Band Jubilee brought “America’s happiest music” to the Brown-Foreman Amphitheater.
Fans tapped their toes and danced along to the upbeat music, which has roots in Louisville.
Jug band music became popular near Churchill Downs around the turn of the last century.
Today’s lineup included jug bands from all over the country.
“It’s a huge deal for the players. They consider this the mecca of jug band music, so every time we start the cycle of trying to get bands, we get bands from as far away as Japan, Iceland,” says Jubilee Festival Manager Myron Koch.
During the show, volunteers put on a workshop for fans who wanted to learn to play jugs and washboards themselves.
